Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security

Slowly, Artificial Intelligence is invading all the sectors where technology plays a major role. From entertainment industry to gaming to software development to monitoring. And, soon there comes a times when it would replace human intervention upto 80%. Which is both good and bad. Good because, it can work more efficiently than human, especially when identical data has to process multiple times, say 1 million times. And bad, because it would hugely affect the job opportunities.

So, let’s not talk about the bad and concentrate on the goods first. One of the best uses of AI is in the field of cyber security. In 2016, a study by Juniper Research estimated that the costs of cybercrime could be as high as 2.1 trillion by 2019. (Source : Wikipedia)

Well, the exponentially rising crime has become a cause of worry. After introducing Artificial intelligence in this sector, a lot of things can be controlled. The biggest problem when dealing with cyber crime is the amount of data and SNR i.e. signal to noise ratio. Human interpretation of such data and signal are far way difficult that we can even imagine. But with AI, we can rely on processed output and its results.

If combined with Machine learning, AI can do wonder for the cyber crime investigation. It can easily analyze the odd behavior. AI machines are tend to read the signals, any wrong signal can be easily caught by the machines. Even the minute signals can be easily caught and processed to fail the attack. With its high level of efficiency AI can be used to add additional security layer. Understanding human behavior help the system to anticipate the incoming threats and act proactively.

The perfect combination of machine learning and artificial intelligence can develop a system that can counter all the of attacks, be it internal attack or external attack. Although, any form of attack is harmful for the system. Hence, it is imperative to fight with any unwanted activity in the system.

The only problem that we are facing in current system is the relying on a non-human system for guarding. We are trusting the output delivered by the AI system after processing the signals. If by chance there is very minute error in the processing, we are almost doomed. And who would take the responsibility of the action taken by the machine itself for wrong processing? Some of such drawback like these making security experts reluctant to trust the AI system blindly.

Till the time we cannot build an absolute robust security system, human intervention is very important. This is also raising a question about the future of Artificial intelligence in the security sector.
